In the most south-eastern state of America bordering Alabama to the northwest and Georgia to the north you find Florida. Visitors to Florida have plenty of Florida beach hotels to choose from, situated on both the Gulf of Mexico and the Atlantic Ocean.
Much of the state of Florida is a large peninsula with the Gulf of Mexico to the west and the Atlantic Ocean to the east and is divided into four regions. The panhandle is the western mainland part of the state and includes the capital city, Tallahassee, and cities of Pensacola and Panama City Beach. The northern section of the panhandled is regarded as the more cultural region and includes the towns of Gainesville and Jacksonville. Central Florida is the theme park capital with Disneyworld, Universal Studios, the Kennedy Space center, Daytona International Speedway and Gatorland. South is home to many much loved beaches including those of Miami, the Everglades and the beautiful Florida Keys.
Although inhabited for thousands of years before European settlers arrived, historically, 'Florida' is the oldest surviving place name in the United States. It was named by a Spanish conquistador in 1513 just after Easter and the term means 'flowery Easter'. In the mid 16th century the first European settlement in continental United States was established in Pensacola. Throughout the following centuries of turmoil with French Huguenots, Spanish settlers and Britain all wanting a piece of the pie as well as Indian attacks and the three Seminole Wars, the state had very mixed fortunes. By the mid 20th century, it was the least populated of the southern states and it was only the advent of World War ll that saw a rise in its economy as people moved in their droves in search of jobs. Today, it is the fourth most populous state in America.
The official language of the state is English but Spanish is the native tongue of at least 20% of the population.
No matter which Florida beach hotel guests choose, there is sure to be an airport close by.
